L.M.O.T.B.

i have a confession to make: i never work during naptime. with the exception of the occasional load of laundry thrown in or dishwasher started (only if there is no room to cook dinner), i do not do any chores while the children are sleeping. certainly not anything that would involve a lot of thought or effort, unless it is an Extreme Emergency. you know, like company is coming for dinner or we are packing to go on a trip.

why? because this is the only time of day that i can do whatever i feel like. i can think in complete sentences without interruption. i can read something (maybe even an actual book, without pictures!) i don't have to feed anyone, or clean up from feeding someone, or plan out what i will be feeding someone next. i can even, *drumroll please*, Take a Nap--apparently the most controversial of all naptime activities. but, if i have been up 3 or 4 times during the night, which has been common lately, or i am gestating (and lets face it--when have i not been gestating these last 5 years), it is really hard for me to get through the day and still be civil to my children without closing my eyes for a while.

it makes sense to me. if i were working outside the home, i would have 2 smokebreaks and an hour for lunch. even the most harried of professionals has to commute to and from work--all alone in the car, listening to whatever radio station they want, and i'm guessing no one is yelling at the top of their lungs "mama, brother is touching me!!"

i recently learned that not all mothers do this, taking time out while the kiddos are asleep. i was told that several of my friends feel that naptime is a perfect time to "catch up" on things around the house, and often feel that they don't have time to rest because there is too much to do. which made me wonder if i am the only one who does this. and if so, does that make me the Laziest Mother on the Block?

you are not, i repeat NOT the laziest mother on the block! i applaud you for taking time for yourself - even if you have felt the need to rationalize it with a professional analogy, but rightly so. remember the sounds you heard coming from the living room tv set when your mother 'insisted' you take a nap. what do you think i was doing - taking time for myself. i applaud the gentle, kind, patient and thoughtful mother that you are! don't forget it, and if you do i am here to remind you.
love and hugs,
mom

Ahhh, Christy, I can't even imagine you as lazy, not one little bit of me can imagine that. Just remember you need refreshing to keep yourself in check to be able to feed those little mouths and nurture them. Middle of the nights are tough. Get your time and know that you have lots of time to clean house, and do all those chores when those little guys are gone from home. The time will go faster then you can imagine. They will remember the mom who loved and spent time with them and won't remember the things you didn't get done around the house. You and Chris are great parents!!! Take care of yourself!!!!!

Love and prayers, Aunt Paula

I think the early years all about survival and doing your best to enjoy all of those special moments. Yes, sometimes the house isn't as clean as I would like, but sitting on the couch, reading to my little ones is so much more rewarding.

I am one of those moms that work and I know that before I went back to work, it was much harder for me to be the mom I wanted to be (mostly due to my unique/crazy personality). Work may be necessary to pay the bills, but honestly, having the time where I get to do something I love and hopefully make a difference in the world is what gives me the energy to jump in the leaf piles with my kids, it makes me make the entire basement into a cardboard town, and yes, I have become a total hugging and snuggling individual (way out of character).

Again, I think it is all about what makes you be the best you can be for your family, and I think napping, taking me time should be a priority (don't worry the dishes won't disappear while you are not looking).

Christy, you are my first blog visit ever...
